Good morning, sweet soul family! I have been feeling called to share my morning self care routines with you all, so in the coming weeks expect some awesome info on a few simple routines that are game changers for sure! Here is an article on one of my faves ~ Oil Pulling!
A huge part of my choice to move to Costa Rica was for me to have more time to take care of ME, heal myself and come closer to the daily things that serve and honor my path on this Earth Walk. I found living in Calgary, AB that I was having a hard time taking care of myself. I was working as a massage therapist, reiki practitioner and sound healer - a career choice that was focused on helping others on their path, and leaving little to no energy for my own. In case you don't know, healers usually need the most healing, go figure.
By CHOOSING to take the time to start with taking care of ME, I have so much more energy to offer others. My personal self care routines are a living, breathing meditation that dances round the sacred intention of being true to myself. I hope you IN-joy them as much as I do.
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that comes to us from India; people have been doing this for thousands of years, so there is definitely something to it. The practice itself stems from the belief that everything in the body can be found in the mouth and stored on the tongue. Oil has the capacity to "pull" the toxins out of the mouth and upon spitting it out, rid you of much of the bacteria that would do your body harm. This is a huge boost to your immune system to get rid of all the tiny guys that hide in your mouth! It is also said to be a cure-all for cavities and root canals, and the best way to skip the dentist in general - it even whitens your teeth! So here is how it goes:
Step 1. Upon waking, you must not drink anything. This ensures that the toxins in your mouth will all come out in the oil. If you ever wondered why morning breath is so stinky, the concentration of bacteria in your mouth is the highest after a good long snooze. By not drinking anything prior to pulling, it also makes you happily drink more water after the oil pull process, getting your body all hydrated for the day.
Step 2. Using 1 Tbsp of organic cold-pressed coconut or sesame oil, open up and put it in your mouth.
Step 3. Get swishing! You will want to vigorously swish the oil around ALL parts of your mouth for 10 - 15 minutes. Don't keep it in your mouth for longer than that or your body will start to reabsorb all the yuck it's trying to get rid of. (Your mouth might get sore at first, it's like any part of your body when you start to work it in a new way, just keep on swishing.) The swishing is also a great teller of presence. You might catch yourself forgetting to swish, but just get back at it. Remember to breathe, and use this time where you can't talk as a great opportunity to be still and meditate.
Step 4. When your swishing time is up simply spit your oil out. I recommend into a compost bucket or designated spot in the garden, as to not gunk up your plumbing.
Step 5. Give your mouth a little swish with water and spit it out. Then grab your toothbrush and give your mouth a nice deserving clean. If you have a tongue scraper, this is your moment to get that tongue cleaner than it has ever been. If you don't have one, simply grab a spoon with a bit of an edge and scrape your tongue from the back of your mouth to the tip, you might see some funky stuff, but it is better that it is out of your body than in.
Step 6. Treat yourself after all that swishing work to a nice tall glass of water. I find that after I oil pull and hydrate, that I am more inclined to go for a nourishing cup of herbal tea than a double shot latte. (Ps each cup of coffee you drink takes two cups of water from your body, so if you are going for the buzz, remember to hydrate first!)
Step 7. Thank yourself for taking the time to heal your body and do something awesome for yourself! Acknowledging ourselves when we are self-loving and self-caring is key to resetting the program, and eventually taking great care of our own beings becomes only natural.
My personal experience with oil pulling has been going on for three years now and I have noticed a HUGE difference in my body's immunity, my overall health, and my mouth and teeth are happy and healthy as could be. I actually went to the dentist for the first time in eight years recently, and they didn't believe me that I hadn't been in so long. I am at the ripe ol' age of 28 and three quarters, and my teeth are pearly white and cavity free. (And I do love myself a good strong coffee!) The dentist said he was going to check out oil pulling, but scientifically it still didn't make him believe me. (Tee Hee!)
Try it for yourself, use your own intuition, and fall in love with the benefits of taking the time to do something amazing for your health and well-being!
Warmest blessings friends. With love,
